How Florida sales tax actually works

Florida has a 6% state sales tax, plus county-level "discretionary surtaxes" of 0.5% to 1.5% on the first $5,000 of any single transaction. The surtax is capped per-transaction (so a $20,000 car purchase in Miami-Dade County pays the 1% discretionary surtax only on the first $5,000), but for most everyday retail purchases the cap doesn't bind and the combined rate effectively applies.

Sample 2026 combined rates (state + discretionary surtax):

  • Miami-Dade County: 7.00% (6% state + 1.0% county)
  • Broward County (Fort Lauderdale): 7.00% (6% + 1.0%)
  • Orange County (Orlando): 6.50% (6% + 0.5%)
  • Hillsborough County (Tampa): 7.50% (6% + 1.5%)
  • Duval County (Jacksonville): 7.50% (6% + 1.5%)
  • Palm Beach County: 7.00% (6% + 1.0%)

The math: add Florida sales tax

  • Add 7%: total = sticker × 1.07
  • A $1,000 laptop in Miami: $1,000 × 1.07 = $1,070. The $70 is sales tax.
  • For a single $20,000 transaction in Miami-Dade: first $5,000 at 7%, remaining $15,000 at 6%, total tax = $350 + $900 = $1,250 (rather than $1,400 if 7% applied throughout).

The $5,000 single-transaction cap

Florida's discretionary surtax caps at $5,000 of taxable value per single transaction. This means on big-ticket purchases (cars, jewelry, electronics, furniture sets), the surtax adds at most $50 in counties with 1% surtax, or $75 with 1.5%. The "single transaction" language is enforced strictly: a $10,000 furniture purchase split into two $5,000 transactions does not double the cap; the auditor will combine them as one transaction.

What's exempt in Florida

  • Most groceries. Food for home consumption is exempt.
  • Prescription drugs and most medical equipment: Exempt.
  • Residential utilities: Generally exempt at the state level for water, sewer, garbage; partially taxable on electricity.
  • Newspapers and educational materials: Generally exempt.

Florida tax holidays

Florida runs multiple sales tax holidays per year. As of 2026, the recurring holidays include:

  • Back-to-school holiday (early August): clothing under $100, school supplies under $50, computers under $1,500.
  • Hurricane preparedness holiday (late May, early September): generators under $3,000, batteries, flashlights, supplies under specific limits.
  • Tool time holiday (Labor Day weekend, in some years): work tools and equipment under various caps.
  • Outdoor recreation holiday (July): fishing equipment, camping gear, kayaks under various caps.

These vary year-to-year as the legislature renews or modifies them. Check the Florida Department of Revenue announcements each year.

How to use the calculator

Enter your county's combined rate (6.5%, 7%, or 7.5% in most counties), then the pre-tax amount. The calculator returns tax and total. For purchases over $5,000 in a single transaction, manually apply the lower 6% state-only rate to the amount above $5,000.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Florida sales tax rate in 2026?

The Florida state sales tax rate is 6%. Counties add discretionary surtaxes of 0.5% to 1.5%, capped at $5,000 per single transaction. Combined effective rates range from 6% (counties with no surtax) to 7.5% (Hillsborough, Duval, others).

What is the Florida discretionary surtax cap?

The county discretionary surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of any single transaction. Above $5,000, only the 6% state rate applies. This caps the surtax at $25 (0.5% counties), $50 (1% counties), or $75 (1.5% counties) on big-ticket purchases.

Why does Florida have no state income tax?

Florida constitutionally prohibits a state income tax. State revenue is generated primarily through sales tax, tourism taxes (lodging, rental car), and property taxes (assessed at the county level). Florida's 6%–7.5% effective sales tax is moderate compared to other no-income-tax states.

When is the Florida back-to-school sales tax holiday?

Typically early to mid-August (10–14 days). Clothing under $100, school supplies under $50 and computers under $1,500 are exempt from state and local sales tax during the holiday window. Exact dates and caps vary by legislative session.

Are groceries taxed in Florida?

Most food for home consumption is exempt from Florida sales tax. Restaurant meals, prepared hot food, and food sold for immediate on-premises consumption are taxable at the full county rate.
