Clothing is the most aggressively discounted category in retail

Unlike electronics or appliances, apparel discounts run year-round and stack in ways most buyers don't exploit. A single category — winter coats, summer dresses, basic denim — can swing 60% in price between the in-season launch and the end-of-season clearance. The trick is knowing the calendar for each subcategory: jeans clear in February, winter coats in late March, athletic wear hits its deepest discounts in July and January, and suits clear in late August.

The calculator above models the at-the-till math: MSRP minus sale percentage minus coupon minus member credit. For apparel especially, the coupon and member-credit layers are where most of the discount lives — the headline sale is rarely the whole story.

The five discount layers on apparel

  1. Sale price. Headline percentage off MSRP. Apparel runs sales nearly continuously, but the deepest discounts (50–70% off) appear at end-of-season clearance windows: late January–February for fall/winter, late July–August for spring/summer.
  2. Promo code / coupon. Most apparel retailers run sitewide coupon codes ("EXTRA20" for 20% off, "FREESHIP50" for free shipping over $50) almost continuously. Sign up for the newsletter once and you'll have a stack of usable codes within a week.
  3. Loyalty program credit. Nordstrom Notes, Lululemon Sweat Collective, REI dividend, Sephora Beauty Insider points all accrue at 1–5% of spend and apply as cash at checkout. Stack on top of sale price + coupon.
  4. Credit-card cashback. Apparel sits in the "everything else" tier for most cashback cards (1–2%), but specific cards (Nordstrom Visa, Lululemon Mastercard) earn higher rates at their own stores.
  5. Email signup discount. Almost every clothing retailer offers 10–15% off your first purchase for signing up to their email list. Stack on top of everything above. Burn a separate email alias to avoid newsletter overload.

Worked example: a Patagonia Nano Puff jacket in late March

The Nano Puff is a $249 MSRP jacket that goes on sale at end of winter:

  • Patagonia.com sale price (late March): $174 (−30%)
  • Sitewide promo code SPRING25 (April 1 anniversary sale): additional 10% → $156.60
  • $20 Patagonia rewards credit (from previous purchase): $136.60
  • Apple Card 3% back: $4.10 → effective $132.50 (−47%)

That same jacket bought in November (peak season) would cost the full $249 — a $117 gap, or 47% extra for buying at the wrong time of year. Patagonia in particular sells through end-of-season inventory aggressively because they re-launch nearly identical product lines each year; the year-old version at $135 is functionally identical to the new year's version at $249.

The "premium athleisure" pricing model

Lululemon, Vuori and Alo Yoga rarely discount their core product lines. The Lululemon Align pant at $98 has been $98 for years, with no holiday sale below MSRP. The discount strategy at Lululemon is exclusively through the "We Made Too Much" clearance section (limited sizes and colours of past seasons), where prices drop 30–50%. If you want a specific colour or size in the current season, you pay full price; if you're flexible, the clearance section delivers genuine discounts year-round.

The same applies to Vuori, Alo, On Running and a few other premium athleisure brands. The implication: don't wait for a sale on your favourite colour. Buy it at full price if you want a specific item, or shop the clearance section regularly to find the size and colour combinations you can live with.

Suits and tailoring: where the deepest discounts hide

Mid-tier suits (Theory, J.Crew Ludlow, SuitSupply) follow a different rhythm. The mens' suit market has been weak since 2020, and suits hit clearance harder than almost any other apparel category. A Theory wool 2-piece at $895 list will routinely sit at $399–$499 by late August, then $299 in October clearance.

The math on a suit purchase is heavily weighted by tailoring cost ($100–$300 depending on alterations). On a $300 clearance suit with $150 in tailoring, you're paying $450 total — which is a clearly better value than buying the same suit at $895 list plus $150 tailoring ($1,045 total) but only if you wear it often enough to amortize.

Outlet stores: deeper than sales, with the right expectations

Brand outlet stores (Nike Factory, Polo Factory, Banana Republic Factory, Coach Outlet) carry product that's either (a) prior-season clearance from the main-line stores or (b) made specifically for the outlet at lower production cost. The first category is a genuine deal — same product as the main store at 30–60% off, just last season. The second category, called "made-for-outlet," uses cheaper materials and construction with branded labelling at outlet-only prices. Both share the rack; the only way to tell them apart is to check stitching density, fabric weight, and the SKU prefix (many brands use distinct codes for outlet-exclusive merchandise). For staple pieces like Nike t-shirts or Coach wallets, outlet quality is usually fine. For investment items like wool overcoats, stick with the main-line store and wait for end-of-season clearance.
